I love the candid portrait, and try to capture the essential nature of the person. I take it as a special quest to capture that essence, which often takes a bit of playful engagement with my subject to have them relax in front of the camera, which isn't the easiest thing in the world to do, as most of us know!
I like both the studio shot, which is more controllable, and those taken 'out in nature' and love to work with natural light. Even if working in the studio, I like to make the lighting as subtle as possible, and use it often to create mood and atmosphere, as well as to highlight certain features of characteristics of the person.
I also like to play around with backgrounds, using a high Renaissance painting as a backdrop is very unusual and usually very flattering. I like to work with children, drawing them out as best I can. It is highly rewarding and a lot of fun!
